Qualified Teams

Total 32 national Football teams have qualified for the 21 World Cup. Being host nation Russia qualified as hosts. On 2 December 2010, Russia became the first qualified team as they won the hosting rights on that day. Remaining all 31 teams qualified through qualifiers including current Champions Germany. The qualified teams are

CONCACAF: Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama.

CAF: Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia.

AFC: Australia, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea.

CONMEBOL: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay.

UEFA: Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Sweden, Switzerland.

Debut Teams

We have two debut teams this time. Iceland and Panama are the two teams who will play FIFA World Cup for the first time. Iceland qualified as winners of UEFA Group I in the qualifiers. On the other hand, Panama came third in the fifth round of CONCACAF qualifiers and made a direct qualification.

All 8 Groups

FIFA conducted a draw that categorized the qualified teams into 8 groups. The draw was held on 1st of December last year at the State Kremlin Palace, Moscow, Russia. Based on FIFA rankings, the teams were placed in four pots. All thirty-two teams of this World Cup are divided into eight groups having 4 teams each. As Russia is the host nation, it was placed in the first group.

Official Mascot

“Zabivaka” is the official mascot of 2018 FIFA World Cup. In Russia, Zabivaka means the one who scores. The mascot is a wolf in brown, white T-shirt and glasses. White shirt, Blue, and red t-shirt are the Russian colors of the National Football team. Ekaterina Bocharova is the designer of the Mascot and it was selected through internet voting. More than 10,00,000 people participated in the internet voting. Tiger and Cat were also in the race for the Mascot. Zabivaka got 53% of votes followed by Tiger with 27% and Cat with 20%. Official Match Ball

The Adidas Telstar 18 will be used for the matches of this Football World Cup. Being the official ball supplier of FIFA, Adidas introduced this ball based on the Adidas’s World Cup match ball. It was presented by Adidas Brand Ambassador Lionel Messi in Moscow on 9 November last year. Its design is inspired by first Adidas match ball used in the FIFA World Cup.

What is the meaning of Telstar?

The word Telstar is the combination of two words “Television” and “Star” which means the star of television. Unlike previous Telstar match ball, the Adidas Telstar 18 is glued instead of stitching.

Referees And VARs

FIFA announced the list of 36 official referees and 63 assistant referees for the finals of the tournament. These are selected from all 6 confederations with a maximum from UEFA. This is the first FIFA World Cup in which VARs [Video Assistant Referees] will be used. After a great Success in Confederations Cup, the technology got approval for the 21st edition.

Stadiums to Host Matches

Initially, Russia proposed 16 Football stadiums of 13 cities to host this competition on its own. On 29 September 2012, the total stadiums were reduced to 12 and cities from 13 to 11. Most of the stadiums are newly built or renovated with extra safety measure and latest equipment. Luzhniki Stadium is the biggest of all with a total seating capacity of 81,000. It will host the opening as well as the final match of the tournament.

Prize Money Distribution

In October 2017, the governing body of Football announced the total prize money for all teams. According to FIFA, a total of $400m will be distributed to all 32 teams based on their final position in the competition. Winners will get $38 million. There is an increase of $42 million amount as compared to that of the previous edition. The prize money distribution as follows:

Opening Ceremony

There will be a grand opening ceremony just before the first match of the competition. Some naming celebrities will perform throughout the ceremony with thousands of local performers. It is expected to run for half-an-hour featuring glimpses of Russia’s culture. All 32 teams will be represented during the show.
