Julen Lopetegui: We Have To Grow Again As A Team

Spanish team head coach Julen Lopetegui said they have to grow again as a team during an interview with AFP. Spain dominated the club Football in last five years winning 5 back to back Champions League and 5 Europa Leagues in the last 7 years. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla always remained in the news of winning club titles. But since winning the last major title in 2012, Spain lost back to back major trophies including FIFA World Cup and Euro Championship.

Julen Lopetegui: We are humble and want to prove ourselves

Spain will be remembered for their dominance from 2008 to 2012 became the first team to win back to back UEFA Euro and a World Cup. After resign of Vicente del Bosque, Lopetegui was named as the head coach who previously managed U19 to U21 Spanish teams from 2010 to 2014. During an interview with AFP, the manager said

“You earn the title of favourites when you win. It’s not when people say you’re a favourite because of achievements, it’s when you show it on the pitch.”

“Spanish Football has lived through an extraordinary, historic period in 2008, 2010, and 2012, but after that, the team has not found the same consistency or Success.”

“We have to grow again as a team. We have the biggest ambitions but we are also very aware that we arrive at this World Cup feeling humble and wanting to prove ourselves.”

Del Bosque hand over some Football greats to Lopetegui with the likes of Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, David Silva, and Andres Iniesta. David De Gea, Isco, Koke, Marco Asensio, and Thiago Alcantara are new to play in the World Cup were exceptionally great in the club competitions.

About the experienced and new faces, the manager said

“There is no doubt they still have a lot to contribute. If not, they would not be at the level they are at with their clubs and with us. What we will try is to blend them with those from the young and new generation.”

“We have to try to mix them into a competitive team and a team that can deliver the Football we want.”

Spain is in Group B of World Cup with current European Champions Portugal. Iran and Morocco are the other two teams. Their first match is against Portugal on 15 June 2018.
